Do you know who your leaders are at CTL? More importantly, do you know how it is that they lead? As we move into our next phase of growth and accomplishment, people sometimes look to leaders for guidance or clarity. It’s important that you know what each leader does so that you aren’t expecting something that someone isn’t meant to provide. So, for your information and understanding, let me introduce you to your leaders:
Senior Minister (Pastor): The minister/pastor not only casts a vision for the church, s/he also continuously articulates the vision and keeps it before the congregation. Other duties include moderating the board of directors (and breaking tie votes), moderating congregational meetings, training/equipping lay ministers, ordering the service of worship, preaching, and supervising the church staff. The pastor also makes sure the congregational care, administration sacraments, religious education, and other duties are performed, but s/he may not necessarily be the one to perform those duties.
Church Staff: Each staff member does what s/he has been hired to do. For instance, our choir director directs our choir. Our office assistant helps with various office duties as asked. Our lead musician accompanies our services, chooses hymns for each worship experience, and plays for two of our choirs. Ministers-in-Residence (aka staff ministers) help out by performing a particular ministry in the church or in the community.
Board of Directors: The Board is the fiduciary committee for the church. They are responsible for the name, property, and monies of the church. They also approve staff appointments, and advise the Senior Minister on certain issues as may be needed. Because of their fiduciary responsibilities, they are obviously involved in property searches, fund-raising, and investing. The board is elected directly by the congregation. The board proposes a budget each year subject to congregational approval. The board can also adjust the budget throughout the year without increasing the bottom line. The senior minister moderates the board (but does not usually vote other than to break a tie).
Lay Delegates: The Lay Delegates represent the congregation at denominational meetings, vote at denominational meetings (MCC ordained clergy also vote at the meetings), and bring back news from the denominational gatherings to the congregation. Lay Delegates are elected directly by the congregational.
Deacons: Deacons are trained and appointed by the Senior Minister and approved by the Board of Directors. Deacons maintain contact with members of the congregation, particularly checking in those who have missed several Sundays. Deacons also contact members who are ill or in the hospital. And deacons assist in the leadership of worship services. Deacons commit to pray throughout the week for those on the church prayer list and are expected to lead a particular area of ministry.
